John Lennon's 70th birthday celebrated by Yoko Ono in Iceland on Oct. 9
In remembrance of what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday, Yoko Ono is planning a series of peace-promoting events in Iceland on Oct. 9.
Ono will continue the annual tradition of lighting the Imagine Peace Tower, which will take place on the island of Viðey, and will be followed by the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band playing a special concert. The artist and peace campaigner, Yoko Ono, will also be presenting awards to figures chosen for their contribution to world peace with a biennial award created in 2002.
The Lennon Ono Grant for Peace - created to honour Lennon's dedication to peace and human rights will go to four recipients.
The Lennon Ono Grant for Peace 2010
The LennonOno Grant for Peace was created to honour her late husband John Lennon’s dedication to peace and commitment to the preservation of human rights. Created in 2002, this biennial award has always been given to two recipients. To mark this special anniversary year, Yoko Ono will be presenting this award to four recipients who have been selected based on their courage and commitment to peace, truth and human rights are:
Josh Fox, who wrote and directed the documentary feature film Gasland, which focuses on communities in the United States impacted by natural gas drilling.
Michael Pollan, who has written bestselling books about the interaction of nature and society.
Alice Walker, most famous for her book The Color Purple, who travelled to Gaza last year to oppose the Israeli blockade and wrote about her experiences.
Barbara Kowalcyk, who has campaigned for food safety.
After the award ceremony she will light the Imagine Peace Tower illuminated memorial, which is located on an island close to Icelandic capital Reykjavik. A ray of light is shot into the night from the island of Viðey, "to join together and let the power of light and prayer become a collective expression of the desire for peace and harmony on our planet." Her relaunched Plastic Ono Band will perform after the ceremony.
The Peace Tower lighting can viewed around the world via a live feed at imaginepeace.com.
